It all began when Charlene Espinoza joined the Peace Corps in 2011. Serving as an English teacher in rural Salala, Liberia, she saw first-hand the challenges that women and girls face on a daily basis.

Why Liberia?

After a long, devastating civil war that destroyed virtually every aspect of human living in Liberia, the country is rebuilding. Eleven years after the end of the war, the recuperation has been a slow process and the destructive effects from the war are still reverberating. Throughout Liberia, two of the biggest problems hindering the country’s recovery are lack of education and crippling poverty.
